Parke County is home to 30 existing covered bridges, most still in daily use. At one time there were 52 1/2 covered bridges in Parke County. Over the years, some have been lost to natural disaster and arson, while others were deliberately dismantled before the days of preservation. The annual Covered Bridge Festival, held to celebrate the history of these structures and generate revenue for their upkeep began back in 1957. Detailed histories and specifications have been gathered for all the bridges that have graced the county’s scenery over the years. You can find that information in this section. References for the information are provided at the bottom of the pages.
